Google search finds seafaring solution - Times Online
Data Centers are VERY costly and not very green. They use a tremendous amount of electricity to keep the systems running and more importantly, to keep them cool. Google is apparently looking at some very innovative approaches to solving this issue...
Move the DCs offshore... no, not to India or Malaysia... (though it could happen there too) but off the shore line about 11KM. They would use the motion of the water and heat from support ships to generate power and cooling for the DCs. Very clever - I don't know what the operating costs of such a setup would be but it is certainly looking at the problem from a very different angle!

't Is Goud - WalletCards on my iPhone
I lived most of my life with a George Costanza wallet (big thick wallet with nothing really in it [stupid loyalty cards mainly]). Over a year ago, I decided to simplify my wallet situation and get rid of most of my cards and various other pieces of paper that found a home in my mock-leather (but not Velcro) wallet. I got a money-clip with a 5 card holder on it from Steinhausen. I now a bit of cash and 5 cards. It's been great (and my back is thanking me for it too)!
Anyhow -- this guy takes things to another level. He has scanned his loyalty cards and put them in his iPhone. For vendors that don't use the magnetic strip and only use the numbers on the card -- this is a cool idea :-)

Files on a home computer that are compressed by using NTFS compression may not be backed up correctly by Windows Home Server
For those of you who went out and got a Windows Home Server -- there has been a long standing (and controversial) bug concerning the backup of certain files on user's computers. This bug has taken months to fix and has been a sore point for many users. It seems the fix is finally available -- you do have to install it on each PC manually -- this is a true shame since it should have been something that the server itself controls to update it's clients... I would have appreciated having the server Autoupdate itself via Microsoft and then have the WHS update its clients as they check in. This would have been the right architecture to adopt. I know, I know, it's a home product, not an enterprise product... Still -- Home networks are mimicking enterprise networks these days...

The Heron has landed: Ubuntu 8.04 officially released
It's hhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeee
Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron -- has flapped its wings and landed on servers around the world. I upgraded my main system yesterday. The update went flawlessly over the network. The system is as responsive (if not a bit more responsive actually but it's too early to tell). I did experience a bit of a VERY annoying hiccup. When I use the number pad (in a spreadsheet for example) -- the second I press a number key, I get logged out of the system... This is NOT good. I'll be looking on the forums for an answer for this one!
Apart from that one incident, I'm very pleased with the new OS.
Update: The fix for the annoying number pad issue I was having is to disable the "mouse control in keypad" under "Mouse Tabs" in the "Keyboard Prefs" -- happy Zombie, happy

Fat, fatter, fattest: Microsoft’s kings of bloat | InfoWorld
This is a must read by all IT professionals. There has always been a sense that Microsoft was getting more and more "bloaty" with each release and that upgrading your hardware to run the latest release of Windows or Office was a necessity in order to achieve the same or better level of performance. This study compared each generation of Windows / Office vs the state of the art PC at the time and compared the performance and footprint. Conclusion -- Microsoft is getting fatter and fatter and essentially annihilating any speed bumps achieved from better hardware (RAM, CPU, BUS etc). Worth a read!

I've been working in or managing virtual teams for many years. It is a HUGE challenge. I'm a fairly social person and it has always been difficult working with people you rarely or NEVER see. You don't have the benefit of breaking bread with your team and sharing non-work related stories over lunch. It is much harder to bond with your team when you only get 30 min or 1hr increments of time with them a week and that time is primarily focused on the task at hand. Here are some things not to do when working in a geographically disparate team...

Finished Installing Windows Vista SP1 ? Now Remove All The Junk Files
As everyone knows -- Vista SP1 is out -- when you installed it, you do however have the option of uninstalling the behemoth of a service pack. If you are committed (or should be for using Vista) to staying with the SP1, then save yourself some disk space and run the Vista Service Pack 1 Cleaner (creatively called vsp1cln <-- run it from the command line).

So many distros -- so many release dates... how does one keep track? The more I use Linux, the more I enjoy the experience. I must admit that when I run into a problem -- it's usually a tricky fix so for that reason I don't know that it's ready for prime-time just yet. Anyhow -- Ars Technica has a good article that talks about the forthcoming releases of some of the major distributions and explains their individual roadmap process...

Arthur C. Clarke dies at 90 - washingtonpost.com
It's a sad day for science fiction fans... Sir Arthur C. Clarke has passed. It's always difficult when the world loses a visionary... RIP
Arthur C. Clarke dies at 90 - washingtonpost.com:
Arthur C. Clarke dies at 90 - washingtonpost.com:
"Clarke was best known in popular culture as the author of the story that inspired Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film '2001: A Space Odyssey,' but his greatest contribution to technology is creating the conceptual framework for geostationary satellites -- machines that would remain in the same spot above the earth and act as relay stations for signals from the ground, covering a wide area. He published a paper about the concept in 1945, which was ultimately realized two decades later. The orbit into which geostationary satellites are placed is now known as the Clarke Orbit."-ZB

Flash video not suitable for iPhone, Apple CEO says
Now this is a bummer -- I miss not having flash on my iPod Touch. Now, the article says that Adobe's Flash player is not suitable for the iPhone... so maybe there is another Flash player that is.
Today's SDK town hall at 1PM Eastern should be interesting... Part of me believes that Apple will release a firmware update that will stop all current jailbreaking techniques from working and the carrot will be some sort of Flash playback capability. This might be just enough to get people to jump onto the standard firmware bandwagon... This is purely speculation on my part... If I'm right, then I hope Apple can adopt many of the brilliant applications that are currently available to people that have jailbroken their devices.

Interesting figures around iPod sales. I can tell you that I've owned many MP3 players in the last many years and nothing, nothing even comes close to the iPod Touch in terms of quality of the audio, video and extra features (Safari, Jailbroken apps {gotta love iPhysics}, etc) so I suppose I'm a convert. I've not jumped off and purchased an OSX box yet but I must admit that I'm VERY tempted considering the quality and ease of use of the iPod Touch.

Poll: Are you spending $20 on new iPod touch apps? - Engadget
iPhone applications were not shipped with the iPod Touch. This new build released yesterday will give you that IF you pay 20$. I find that disgusting since the iPod Touch (16GB) is the same price as the iPhone without the phone technology!! So why would the iPod Touch user PAY for this??
My device is "jailbroken" and I have ALL of these apps on my 1.1.2 iPod Touch. I'm not updating! Fill out this poll to see if Engadget has some pull with Apple.

It seems there is a plus pack for Vista on the horizon. Frankly, I would expect Microsoft to provide this for free given the mess they've achieved to create with Vista.

Getting Started With Microsoft Windows Home Server -- Home Networking -- InformationWeek
Good overview document on Microsoft's Windows Home Server. I've been using this product for nearly a year (through the betas) -- I must say that it does fill a niche market and I really appreciate having it in my house. You could obviously setup a file server, media server, automate some backup scripts, stand up a VPN server and a Web server (etc...etc..) but then you'd have to manage each service, each script -- it's a hassle and who has time to do this these days? Check this out -- it might help give you back some of that weekend / evening time you miss so much :-)

Microsoft Watch - Business Applications - Enterprises Are Deploying Office 2007 Without Vista
It seems that Microsoft has not build sufficient synergies between Vista and Office 2007... Also, Office 2007 is viewed as superior product to Office 2003 and Vista is seen as adding very little. Conclusion: Enterprises are migrating to Office 2007 and leaving Vista on the shelf.

Windows Vista, Office 2007 Expelled From British Schools -- Windows Vista -- InformationWeek
Well, the title says it all... it seems the British school system doesn't see a compelling reason to migrate to a newer OS and Office version. They site compatibility concerns and Microsoft's failure to support the Open Document Format which is a recognized international standard.

"iPod Tax" smacked down in Canada
It seems that Canada's equivalent to the RIAA has pulled the notion of an "iPod Tax" in Canada. They figured that the way the tax was setup {and it would have been expensive for the user 75+$ more when you buy a large MP3 player {>30GB}} -- it would allow or at least condone P2P file sharing. In other words, if you paid the tax, you could do what ever (non-commercial) you wanted to with the music. I'm sure there will be another battle -- this is not over yet.

Sun's Goal: No In-House Data Centers by 2015 - Data Center Knowledge
Talk about going green... Sun would like to have zero Data Centers by 2015. They have already decreased the number of servers they run substantially but will continue to reduce aggressively. They will need to outsource (or OutHost as they call it) some data center functionality but good on them for taking this approach. Focus will also be made to offer SaaS (Software as a Service) to reduce costs -- another clever initiative.

Some Ubuntu users get confused on where to make certain changes. Well, the Ubuntu forums are fantastic for much of these questions but I stumbled on a tool called "Ubuntu Tweak" that seems to group many of these FAQ-type configuration questions into a nicely presented GUI. Think of it as TweakUI for Ubuntu. I have not yet used it but the feedback looks positive.

AOL Money & Finance Beta
I've been a long time fan of Yahoo finance and to a certain extent, Google finance but this new beta offering from AOL looks really slick and is very informative. It is jacked up with all the Web 2.0 you can think of and provides a great deal of information at a glance. Worth taking a look and track some stocks... On the other hand, given the volatility in the market these days... maybe you don't :-)

Canada's labels slam proposed digital 'tax' - Yahoo! Canada News
A progressive view on paying for music. This is Canada we're talking about here so of course it's yet another tax... Just what we need... That being said, it's an idea that will stimulate some discussion -- flat tax on all ISP customers (5$/mo) and you have access to all of the music you want...
